By Waqar Mustafa LAHORE (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Parents and clerics in Pakistan’s most populous Punjab province who allow the marriage of underage children will face greater penalties than before as the provincial assembly has passed changes to a law. The Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Act, which previously provided for a month-long prison sentence and a fine of Rs 1,000 [about 100 rupees to a dollar] for parents of children but spared clerics solemnizing the marriage contract, increased penalties to a six-month prison term and a fine of Rs 50,000 for the parents and the cleric. No case of early child marriage was reported from Balochistan.
