Treat gum disease, prevent heart disease: study

The heart and mouth go hand in hand, according to recent research that suggests gum disease treatment could improve cardiac health. Using an oral topical gel to reduce inflammation of the gums could also prevent vascular inflammation, according to a new study that claims to be the first to demonstrate this finding. "Our research is helping to underscore the very real link between oral health and heart disease," says lead investigator Hatice Hasturk, DDS, PhD, an associate member of Forsyth's Department of Applied Oral Sciences and director of Forsyth's Center for Clinical and Translational Research in Massachusetts. "The general public understands the connection between heart health and overall wellness, and often takes appropriate steps to prevent heart disease," says Dr. Hasturk. Study authors say it's time to add oral health to the list of smoking, cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes as something to consider when it's a question of the heart.
