Researchers from two universities have discovered that certain substances boost the ability of antibiotics to fight deadly bacterial illnesses. Among them are the dreaded methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and anthrax. The team, representing Northwestern University and the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine), previously produced compounds that they determined have an important role in treating neurodegenerative diseases. In their more recent work, the scientists paired these inhibitor compounds with certain antibiotics to learn whether they could suppress nitric oxide synthase (NOS), an enzyme, to boost the effectiveness of the drugs, according to ScienceDaily.
