New Vaccine Teaches Immune System to Battle Melanoma

Illinois researchers are conducting a Phase 1 clinical trial to test the ability of a new vaccine to teach the human immune system to fight melanoma. Incidence of this type of cancer has been increasing for decades. Loyola University Medical Center scientists remove killer T cells from a patient. The goal of the procedure is for the genetically engineered cells to recognize melanoma cells as abnormal structures, then mount an attack on them and destroy them.
