Scientists Develop Accurate Home Strep Test

A research team has developed an at-home strep throat test they claim is nearly as accurate as those performed by laboratories. Scientists from the University of California, San Diego teamed with those from Boston Children's Hospital to study the type of strep that causes sore throats, group A streptococcus (GAS), according to Medical News Today. Their findings appeared in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine and indicated that proper use of the new test could eliminate up to 230,000 healthcare visits each year. While merely having strep throat isn't particularly dangerous, it can lead to other illnesses such as sinus, middle-ear, or blood infections, according to the Mayo Clinic.
