North Carolina researchers have completed the first study to evaluate how hypertension affects men and women differently. Their findings indicate that women who suffer from hypertension face a significantly higher risk than men of developing vascular disease. When scientists from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center began their study, the prevailing practice was to base treatment on the belief that high blood pressure affected men and women the same way, Medical News Today reports. Hypertension and high blood pressure are interchangeable terms that represent the force blood exerts against arterial walls.
