Swedish Research Links Smoking to 4 Eye Disorders

The findings of a large study of Swedish men have linked smoking to the development of cataracts and three other eye disorders. Researchers analyzed data from 44,371 men between the ages of 45 and 79 in a study known as the Cohort of Swedish Men, according to Medical News Today. Lead author Dr. Birgitta Ejdervik of Orebro University Hospital indicated that the amount of time it takes the risk of cataracts to decrease is in direct proportion to the intensity of the subject's smoking. Smoking 15 cigarettes each day boosted the need for cataract surgery by 42 percent over the risk of individuals who had never smoked.
