Study yields pregnancy guidance for the obese

Those who are obese before becoming pregnant could benefit from new weight gain guidelines established in a new study. Waiting until you're halfway through your pregnancy to start gaining weight could prevent complications if you're obese, according to a new study conducted at the Magee-Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the US. This applies to those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35-39.9, which healthcare professionals consider class II obesity and also to those with a BMI of 40 or more, which falls under class III obesity. "Monitoring weight gain during pregnancy is key for optimal outcomes, and this is the first time we've had a glimpse of reference points for women with class II and class III obesity," says lead author Dr. Jennifer Hutcheon. Citing a lack of sufficient data, the current US guidelines, established by the Institute of Medicine, do not advise obese women to curb weight gain.
